The Postpartum Time; Recovery is Essential

PP mom and baby.jpg

During pregnancy, labor and the postpartum time, the female body undergoes many changes. From hormone fluctuations, changes in center of gravity, loose ligaments, and stretched muscles to severe sleep deprivation, changes in activity levels. All of that in addition to a new intense focus on another human being other than ourselves. Women’s bodies and minds go through a lot .

Why is pelvic floor PT encouraged for the postpartum momma?

Pregnancy and childbirth are similar to athletic events. The body goes through many physical changes during the four trimesters (three trimesters of pregnancy and the very important but often overlooked fourth trimester after delivery). It is encouraged to prepare, as well as recover, physically (and mentally) for these changes in a similar way to how a runner prepares for and recovers from running a marathon. Being seen and treated by a physical therapist who has a specialty in pelvic floor physical therapy can improve your pregnancy, labor and postpartum phases.
