Urinary incontinence postpartum is not an uncommon complaint of new mothers; your ligaments, tendons, and muscles that support and help you maintain continence have all been stretched and pulled to extreme lengths over the past nine months. It takes time for everything to return to their proper places and approximate sizes postpartum. Sometimes however, normal functioning, such as the ability to hold one’s urine, does not fully return on its own. Urinary incontinence can be caused by multiple factors, two of which are issues that can be improved via physical therapy. One, pelvic floor muscles that have been severely stretched out and are therefore weak, and two, pelvic floor muscles that are severely tight due to the pain of childbirth and are therefore weak.
At Verity Physical Therapy & Wellness we can assess your pelvic floor muscles and determine if your urinary incontinence is a result of too tight of muscles which is causing weakness, or a result of muscles that have been stretched out and are therefore weak and need to be “re-activated” properly. We are highly skilled in teaching the proper way to contract and relax the pelvic floor muscles, as well as advising on how to incorporate exercises and stretches into your every day life activities to best set you up for success!
